When you arrive at the Emergency Department, either by ambulance or on foot, a complex process begins.

Critical life threatening problems are taken care of immediately. The sickest or most severely injured people are prioritized and seen first. You may not always be aware of other patients who require our immediate attention. A quiet, empty waiting room can sometimes be misleading as ambulances come in where they can’t be seen.

Your evaluation, treatment and diagnosis may require many tests, such as radiology, ultrasound, and CT scan. The X-ray technicians will come to your room and accompany you to the proper area. It takes 60 – 90 minutes to schedule, complete and analyze these tests.

Hopefully, you will be able to go home after treatment. If so, you will be given specific instructions for your care after discharge. Please feel free to ask questions.

If you are admitted to the hospital, you may have to wait for an appropriate room and nurse assignment. You may also need to be examined by your admitting physicians.

Visitors are generally limited to parents of children, or one family member or close friend for adults, as circumstances allow. This helps eliminate congestion so that emergency personnel can move freely, and it preserves your privacy and the privacy of other patients.

GRMC’s Emergency Department offers a broad range of emergency services. Anyone whose health needs cannot be met will be transported to a hospital with the services he or she requires. You or your loved one will be treated by a team of trained emergency specialists including doctors, registered nurses, emergency medical technicians and respiratory therapists to name a few. Other specialists are available as needed. Our Emergency Department is here to serve your emergency needs with efficiency, care and professionalism.
